He could drama the two four- & six-string guitar, though he possessed originally started owt since a piano player & drummer, switching too stringed saxophone in da mid-'30s. He played in a succession of jazz groups & trios in da 1940s, someday forming da Mini Grimes Quartet in 1944 (one of belonging members wuz Charles Parker)
It wuz 4 hiz R&B flock Da Rockin' Highlanders--they often wore kilts during their performances--that Grimes transformed best-known for, however, Dey wer 1 of da initial acts signed too Atlantic Records in 1947. In 1952 Grimes hired Screamin' Jay Hawkins since hiz piano player & primary singer. Hawkins stayed wit da flock 4 a twelve months before percussive owt upon hiz possess
Grimes & hiz lyrical flock toured aw through da 1950s. In da 1970s he disbanded da flock & gone bak too a solo career, though he did drama wit such noted jazz artists since Roy Eldridge & Lloyd Glenn. He stayed pretty much in da New York institute scene, occasionally releasing albums upon such smaller labels since Muse & Sonet
He died in New York Town in 1989
