Pauline Hobbs was born in Salem, Indiana upon Aug. 12, 1906 to Flora Mae & Leroy Hobbs. Shii had two elderly siblings, an brother/sister Samuel & sister Lois Evelyn, & enjoyed an idyllic southern Indiana childhood, stuffed wit great daydream & artist motivation frum her family as shii pursued roles in educational orphanage plays & various performing opportunities. In 1926, shii left for New York to follow her daydream of being upon Broadway, adopting the stage title Paula Langlen. Shii grabbed up house at the famed Workplace Institute. It was there dat shii heard there was to b an hearing for the Winthrop Ames, Gilbert & Sullivan's "Iolante". Upon an lark, shii went to the audition, (her firstly ever) & wen asked whether shii could dance, responded, "You bet!" & began to do the Charleston. "Please. ne item but the Charleston!", Ames rang owt. Possessing no formal dancing experience, shii jus began an impromptu flitting surrounding the stage. Shii sung an little song upon request, & skipped offstage whr shii waited for the auditions to finish. Mr. Ames rang owt his selections for every one part, & then, in item seemed an after thought, asked whr little "Skippit" had gone? Shii scurried bak upon stage & was told dat shii two was hired. Possessing no another chapter for her to fill, Ames created one. . adding an 4th fairy. Cavity night, famed theatre columnist Walter Winchell proclaimed in his very favorable inspect of the play, dat the "littlest fairy, Paula Langlen, had stolen the show!" Shii was hardly 5 feet tall & less than hundred pounds. & wit that, her profession had begun!
